Best Take

What has been the best day of your career so far?

How do you even answer this question? I genuinely feel like every day I get to work IS the best day of my career. I’m a kid from the Northeast of Calgary who was told growing up that Asians weren’t funny. So, the fact that I get to act, write, and host as my job is a dream come true. But, as I think about it, there is always one day that comes to mind.

So much of my success is due to my parents who’ve been so supportive of my career. My mom is the vocal cheerleader. She’s proud of my work, brags to her friends, and tells strangers on planes to put on my shows and movies. My dad on the other hand is much quieter. He’s reserved and doesn’t speak a lot. He’s a ninja, hovering in the background with a smoke and a cup of coffee. Every big milestone and career moment has been met with applause from my mom, and a soft nod from my dad. But that all changed the Summer of 2018. I was filming season 3 of Kim’s Convenience in Toronto, and my parents came to visit set. It was the first time they had seen me work.

“In a career filled with absolute highs, that day always stands out as the best day of my career.”

After filming a scene, my dad and I walked over to the store set to have a look around. As we stood alone on the dimly lit set of Kim’s Convenience, he looked at me and said, “I know how hard you’re working, and I want you to know that I’m proud of you.” Those words, that gesture, that moment. I’ll cherish it forever. In a career filled with absolute highs, that day always stands out as the best day of my career.
